Kansas City Chiefs Take Interesting Stand On Rashee Rice During OTAs
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

On Monday, the Kansas City Chiefs made an interesting choice on wide receiver Rashee Rice for the beginning of OTAs this week. Rice has been the subject of several significant storylines this offseason involving the police.

Rice faces eight felony charges in connection to a high-speed crash that occurred on Easter weekend. Rice took responsibility for his actions in the crash and admitted to being the driver of one of the vehicles that was involved in the crash.

Rashee Rice participated in phase one this spring

As previously discussed on GH, Rice participated in the Chiefs offseason workout program following the crash. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said he’d wait for law enforcement to investigate more:

The Chiefs held their first day of OTA workouts on Monday. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was asked about Rice’s involvement with the team. According to Ian Rapoport with the NFL Network, Reid said Rice would be a virtual participant with the team:

“I’m leaving that, like we’ve done most of these, for the law enforcement part to take place and then we will go from there with that.”

And they did.

Rice has had more troubling reports surface

Dallas police are investigating Rice for an alleged assault case stemming from an incident at a club earlier in May. No arrests or charges have been brought in that case as of this publishing.

The Chiefs expected Rice could face a severe suspension from the league following the high-speed crash. Other reports about an alleged incident in Rice’s history at SMU have surfaced. Many NFL fans, including Chiefs fans, have called for Rice to be cut in the previous few months.

The Kansas City Chiefs only have one stance: winning

However, the Chiefs intend to stick by Rice until they’re forced to move on from the second-year wide receiver.

According to Adam Schefter with ESPN, Rice will attend and participate in all Chiefs activities during OTAs on Monday.

The Chiefs know they’re better with Rice on the field than with him off of it. They don’t really seem to care what outsiders think of the culture in the building, as evidenced by their stance on Harrison Butker following his controversial commencement speech.

What is the incentive for the Chiefs to change their strategy? Fans continue to support their system that has won three out of the previous five Super Bowls.

Winning cures all. As long as the Chiefs keep winning, they have no reason to change their philosophy on how they deal with internal issues.

The only things that might change Rice’s ability to suit up this fall are the legal system and/or the NFL. The Chiefs aren’t going to draw a line in the sand on what’s tolerable in their locker room.
