Green Bay Packers A Top Suitor For Former Rival Offensive Lineman
Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

The Green Bay Packers are keenly aware of the importance of shoring up their offensive line to support QB Jordan Love’s progression, evident in their strategic move during last weekend’s NFL draft.

Opting for left tackle Jordan Morgan from Arizona as their 25th overall pick, the Packers are filling the void left by the departure of five-time All-Pro David Bakhtiari in the offseason. Morgan is set to vie for the starting role against 2022 seventh-round pick Rasheed Walker, a critical position in the line.

One notable absence yet to be addressed is right guard Jon Runyan Jr., who secured a lucrative $30 million contract with the New York Giants in free agency.

One potential solution in Green Bay’s sights is Dalton Risner, previously with the Denver Broncos and most recently associated with the rival Minnesota Vikings.

In a recent article by David Kenyon of Bleacher Report, Risner was highlighted among the top 10 free agents still available post-draft, with the Packers touted as an attractive destination for the lineman.

“Last year, Dalton Risner went unsigned until Week 3, when the Minnesota Vikings signed him to a one-year, $3 million contract. He proceeded to allow zero sacks and got called for only three penalties across 745 snaps, according to Pro Football Focus [PFF]. Risner might not be a star, but he proved last year that he’s a starting-caliber guard.”

Risner has been outspoken about his frustration regarding his ongoing free agency.

His determination, evident by the chip on his shoulder, is expected to drive him to maintain high performance levels, potentially affecting his contract negotiations. Spotrac estimates Risner’s market value at around $30 million over a new three-year deal, roughly $10 million annually.

For a team like the Green Bay Packers, with their current need at right guard, Risner’s worth may well justify the investment.
